The Bishop’s Palace is the residence of the archbishop of Đakovo, as well as the location of the main institutions and offices of the Diocese. It is a Baroque one-storey building consisting of two wings, located south of the Cathedral of St. Peter; it forms the western border of the main Đakovo square with the Cathedral. Nearly the entire front part of the Palace was constructed in the mid-18th century, during the term of Bishop Ćolnić. Another part was added during the term of Bishop Krtica, while the south wing, next to the park, was constructed during Bishop Raffay’s term.
The Palace was extensively renovated before the visit of Pope John Paul II to Đakovo. The original colour of the façade adorning the entrance portal was restored, and above the entrance portal is a niche containing a sculpture of the Virgin Mary with Jesus (the work of the Đakovo sculptor Vatroslav Donegani). Parlours adorned with portraits of bishops and other valuable works of art were also restored to their former glory. The chapel dedicated to St. Joseph, a remnant of the previous Cathedral, is also located within the Palace.
