The Monastery Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

The Church of the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross is part of the convent and it was built in 1908 in the late French Baroque style, in the shape of the cross. The land on which the church and the convent were built was gifted to the sisters by Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer, who invited the sisters to come to Đakovo from Switzerland.

The church is 37 meters long, 11 meters wide and 17 meters tall. It has four altars - the main altar, two side altars and St. Anthony’s altar at the entrance to the church. The altars are made of wood and decorated in gilded angels and floral, leaf and wine ornate elements. The church also boasts its bells, which toll to announce convent and church feasts. Another thing of great value that the church has is its organ, installed in 1942, with 3 keyboards, 28 stops and a full pedalboard.

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is the favourite shrine of the citizens of Đakovo and churchgoers from surrounding towns and villages. Since 1913, the church has been the main place of worship on the Feast Day of St. Anthony of Padua, 13 June. That is when throngs of pilgrims flock to the church and holy mass is offered for their specific intentions. Holy mass is held on that day at 5:00, 6:30, 8:00, 9:30, 11:00 and 17:30 h. The blessing of children takes place on 16:00 and confessions are taken from 4.30 h.
