One of Đakovo’s cultural imperatives has always been preservation of folklore. These efforts are contributed to by the Đakovo Embroidery Festival, a well-known and long-lived event celebrating national folklore and reflecting and promoting many of the authentic customs.

The value of Slavonian customs has been recognized by UNESCO as well, with bećarac, traditional humorous singing, often lascivious in character, and the Spring Procession of Ljelje/Kraljice (queens) from Gorjani near Đakovo being included in UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists.
